Pioneering Aviation

technical academic

Join us for an evening with Ashraf Mostafa, Systems Test Lead at Joby Aviation and McGill alumnus, as he shares insights from more than 26 years in the aerospace industry.

Ashraf will discuss his career journey, aircraft testing and certification, the challenges behind bringing new aircraft technologies to market, and the rapidly evolving world of eVTOL and Advanced Air Mobility.

This is a great opportunity for students interested in aerospace, engineering, emerging aviation technologies, or careers in the industry to hear directly from an experienced aerospace leader.

Fly-By-Wire Challenge with Airbus

technical academic

On March 28, the MIAE took over MD267 for the Fly-By-Wire Challenge with Airbus. Participants built custom wing sections with active flap systems, utilizing Arduino kits generously provided by Professor Sabih. The mission was to code a control loop that could survive our simulated flight profile—proving that software engineering is just as vital to flight as the airfoils themselves. We were honored to have two experts from Airbus on-site to mentor the teams, following a deep dive into the physics of lift by Professor Nadarajah. Every team rose to the occasion, successfully navigating “turbulence” and “gusts” to earn their certificates of completion. It was a high-energy success that showcased the incredible talent and “flight-ready” logic within our McGill aerospace community.

AeroFair 2025

professional

The McGill Aero Fair was more than just a formal gathering/networking event; it was a vibrant platform showcasing the passion and ambition that define our aerospace community. Driven by the tireless initiative of the MIAE student executive committee and the McGill Vertical Flight Society, the fair transformed our campus into a high-energy hub where the future of flight felt within reach. Under the dedicated guidance of Professor Sivakumaran Nadarajah, our student organizers worked behind the scenes to bring twelve global titans—including Airbus, MDA Space, Bombardier, and Pratt & Whitney—to the heart of McGill. The atmosphere was electric as 191 students from across Engineering and Computer Science engaged in genuine, face-to-face conversations. The impact of the day resided in these personal interactions, as students handed over their CVs and shared their project experiences directly with industry leaders. We are incredibly proud of the MIAE team for fostering an environment where talent meets opportunity, proving that when you bring the right people together, the possibilities are endless.

Internship Prep Panel

professional academic

Landing a first internship in the aerospace world can feel like a daunting climb, which is why we prompted our student community to come together for an evening of honest conversation and career preparation. We were thrilled to see about 30 motivated students take the initiative to join us in the MacDonald Engineering Building, all eager to sharpen their edge before the McGill Tech Fair. The evening started with a practical workshop led by Elizaveta Vorontsova from the Engineering Career Centre, who helped us demystify the recruitment process. Instead of just general advice, students received hands-on tips on how to polish their resumes and master the soft skills that turn a quick introduction into a lasting impression with a recruiter.
